I couldn’t get a look-in on any of the BBC graduate trainee schemes so I joined as an engineer. VT Editor at 24 (believed to be a BBC record), nominated for a Bafta for ‘Tutti Frutti’ but after twelve years of trying to move into programme-making culminating in being told – aged 33 – that ‘lads like me’ (bright, working-class technicians, assumed to worship football) could ‘really make it in sport’, I took redundancy (and another degree).
