In 1966-1968, the University built a television studio in the basement of Southpark House, to support teaching facilities. Previously, the University T.V. service operated as a mobile unit (already based in Southpark House), recording lectures and providing live video links between departments, for example to enable more students to attend experiments.
A 1968 Glasgow University Guardian article about the official opening of the new facilities closes with the line “Perhaps the next addition will be a student operated T.V. service for students” — GUST’s beginning as a broadcasting station.
In a previous article (1966), the new camera equipment is also shown as a portable production unit based in a converted van.
